Whether you are retiring, downsizing, up-sizing, or simply looking to relocate, it is crucial that you ask the right questions when you purchase a new house. The house hunting process can be, at times, frustrating, exciting, and overwhelming, but amidst all of these emotions it is important to remember the more practical side of your purchase. Here are a few questions you need to make sure that you ask before you make an offer on a new home.

Question 1: When was the house built?

If you are building a new home yourself this question is obviously not going to be necessary; however, it is crucial to know just how old a house is before you decide to show interest. If the home was built relatively recently then odds are that it has up to date plumbing, electrical, and other systems; however, if it is a house that was constructed, say, 30 or 40 years ago then it might need some updating. This is important, as the process of updating these systems will eat into your budget and should be considered when making an offer.

Question 2: What is the crime rate in the neighborhood?

Crime is something that you should certainly consider before moving into a new community. Checking neighborhood statistics online and talking to local residents are great ways to get a feel for the safety and security that the area has to offer. Make sure that you choose a home in a neighborhood that is comfortable—you want to be able to relax in your new house, not constantly worry about your safety.

Question3: Are any renovations needed to bring the home up to your standards?

You probably have a vision of what you want your new home to look like. While it is not always possible to find a house that meets all of your expectations, you can find homes that can be renovated to meet your needs without putting you over budget. But the key is to understand just how extensive these renovations will be before you make an offer, as you certainly don’t want to purchase a house that you cannot afford to make your own. To minimize the renovations you have to make, try to purchase a home that has solid bones but just needs simple cosmetic updates—if any at all.

Question 4: What is the community like?

The community in which you settle will play a major part in dictating the activities in which you can engage. For instance, a seaside community will allow you to enjoy boating, fishing, and other water-based activities. Additionally, the neighborhoods that are near the mountains can allow for quick day trips full of hikes, mining, and other fun activities. Try to consider, also, what your family enjoys and whether or not you will have your kids or grandkids visit often, as you will certainly want a community that serves their interests, too, if they will be spending a great deal of time at your new home.

Picking the right house is definitely a difficult process, as there are so many different things to consider; however, asking these questions can help you narrow your options and choose a home that you will love for years to come.
