Retirement is an exciting time of life when you are finally able to stop punching the clock and start really enjoying yourself. Whether this means traveling to distant lands or spending more time with your family, it is important that you have a comfortable home base to return to. Many people opt to buy a new house when they retire, as they want to downsize or even upsize, based upon how often they expect guests. After spending years in your former home it might seem difficult to decorate a new property, but there are some great ways in which you can create a space that you love—and that you will look forward to returning to after all of your adventures.

Choosing the Right Colors

Decorating your new home is all about color. Which colors do you like? What kind of an atmosphere are you looking to create? Study upon study has shown that the colors in a room can actually impact the way that individuals feel when spending time there. For instance, warmer colors (i.e. red, orange, yellow, pink) are vibrant and energetic. These are great for areas in which you want to feel energized and lively. Cooler colors (i.e. blue, green, purple) are more relaxing and provide for a more tranquil living experience. Try choosing colors based on both what you like and the kind of environment you want to create. For instance, you might opt for a beautiful red in the living room and a serene blue in the bedroom.

Spotlighting What Is Important to You

When it comes to actual decorations, who wants to use items that mean nothing to them? Instead of simply buying things that match, pick out pictures, art, and other décor that is special to you. When shopping, a great rule of thumb is only to buy things that you would later regret leaving behind. If you know you will think about an item, a painting or picture frame, for instance, after you leave the store, go ahead and invest. If you don’t think you will care that much, though, this item doesn’t necessarily need a place in your home.

Collage walls are wonderful ways to display pictures, art, and other items. Try choosing one large wall and create a collage with photos, paintings, and shelving with books, vases, and other items. The different colors and textures on the wall will create interest and allow you to enjoy your favorite pieces.

Remember the Exterior

It can become quite easy to overlook the exterior of your home when you are decorating, but the truth is that you can make the most of your new property by creating outdoor living areas. For example, a front porch can provide a wonderful seating area that you can enjoy when visiting with family or friends or spending some time outside when the weather is nice. Likewise, a deck or patio in the backyard is a fantastic place for gathering friends and family or simply enjoying some fresh air on your own.

Choose seating that is weather resistant but comfortable. Inject bright colors into your outdoor spaces using pillows and lanterns to create a fun yet tranquil environment in which you can really enjoy this extended living area.

No matter where you are moving, it is important that you decorate your home in a way that will allow you to make the most out of your retirement. After your adventures it is essential that you have a beautiful, comfortable home to return to.
